Joe Jared posts by name only to a few groups. Some of them are alcoholic recovery groups, such as
alt.recovery.from-12-steps . Well here are 2 posts where "Cujo"
attacks someone in this very

For a heavy drinker, it will stay longer if there's damage to kidneys or
the liver.

If by mildly, you mean you go from depressed to hypomanic, expect a bit
more narrow of range. Lithium Carbonate is a mood stabilizer. Should it
not work for you, they may prescribe trileptal instead, which is baby
safe. Expect periodic blood tests to make sure your lithium serum level
is in an acceptable range, and other tests less often to make sure it
isn't affecting your body in a negative way. From my last psychiatrist's
opinion, lithium helps some and trileptal helps others, often exclusively.
Of utmost importance is to let your doctor know if it's not working well.
You probably wont feel the affects immediately, and it will likely be a
couple weeks before your swings start to stabilize. Of the above
medications mentioned, there are potential side-effects, but both can be
tested for before any permanent damage is caused. If memory serves,
lithium can affect the kidneys, and trileptal c an affect the liver, but
both conditions can be tested for and monitored. When I was about 17 I
was put on lithium, and knowing it worked, went back on Lithium on January
19, 2005. It was the best decision I made in 23 years.

Now that I've got your attention.... :)
A friend of mine had problems similar to yours and didn't stop
immediately. That's the insanity of the drink, and one of the reasons for
step 2. Fortunately for him, he's been sober for over 5 years now, and
the consequences of his drinking have healed themselves, but he doesn't
forget he's an alcoholic. As an alcoholic, each time we relapse it gets
worse, period. The suffering gets worse, the losses increase, and it's
harder getting sober each time. I've been blessed to have never suffered
in the liver/kidneys dept, but that's only because I stopped sooner than
most. My relapses have never lasted longer than 6 months, and my
alcoholic drinking at most was 1 1/2 years. Prior to that I only
intermittently abused alcohol.
The fact a person would have ill effects from drinking alcohol
would tell a normal person to stop, but not an alcoholic. An alcoholic
will rationalize countless ways to consume alcohol and not have
consequences. Your body is telling you to stop alcohol completely, or you
will die. I doubt you can cut back, as evidence has shown that you drink
in excess, and over time would revert to that same excess or worse. Were
I to do a cost analysis and risk factor, abstinence seems the best bet
financially, and to heal your body. Unlike me, you have physical evidence
of a drinking problem. My only physical evidence is on my hands from doing
stupid things while drunk, but you've drank for so long you've damaged
vital organs. The only real question for you is how much more suffering
you're willing to go through before you get it.
